**Bhubaneswar**: Two days after carrying out demolition drive at ISKCON temple, the Joint Eviction Squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today demolished portico of a temple near the entrance to Krishna Garden near Jagamara area here.
Executive Engineer Drainage Division of BMC was present during the demolition as the structure was raised over a drain nearby.
Earlier, the BMC has announced its ”Zero Tolerance Policy’’ to encroachment and illegal occupation of space over drains across the city in the wake of water-logging and submergence in many pockets across the city during the last rains.
The Joint Eviction Squad also demolished some other structures near Nayapalli Haza area and Krishna Garden today for better management of rainwater and to ensure smooth disposal of drainage water.
The Nayapalli Haza eviction programme was carried out to remove the unauthorised structures to ensure the carrying capacity of the water body. Digging of Nayapalli Haza has started to remove the silt as well as construction and building material waste as they are being dumped in an unauthorised manner.
Unauthorised structures under construction with fly-ash bricks were also demolished by the joint squad before lunch. The operation was later stalled due to heavy rains and it will be taken up tomorrow. In fact, today’s joint operation was carried out without the help of local police.
Meanwhile, the group of youths under the banner Yuva Odisha called off their hunger strike. The group was demanding action against encroachers of Nayapalli Haza and revival of the water body, from which originates the Drainage Channel No. 10.
It can be mentioned here that the BMC Drainage Division will prepare a master plan for constructing entire drain network for Krishna Tower to Mumtaz Ali High School and Mumtaz Ali High School to Nayapalli Haza area, so that water from Behera Sahi Chhak upto Mumtaz Ali High School and upto Nayapalli Haza can flow smoothly through the Drainage Channel No. 10. Secondly the obstructions on the channel itself would also be cleared up to Bidyut Marg as the original width of the water body has been reduced due to illegal encroachments.
