Bhubaneswar: Delhi-based journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra has begged apology through a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. He is most wanted by Odisha Police for his derogatory remarks allegedly against the State, its religion, culture, Konark Sun Temple, Shree Jagannath Temple, MLAs and also accused of breaching Privilege of the august House here.

The Supreme Court has also on October 5 rejected his bail plea reportedly passing stricture that he has incited religious sentiments and his safe place is in jail.

The apology letter written to the Odisha Assembly Speaker reached here on the day Abhijit Iyer was summoned to appear before the House Committee that is probing into the Breach of Privilege allegedly committed by him.

Abhijit was earlier summoned to depose before the House Committee today (October 11). The Committee is being led by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra.

In his media reactions, Leader of Opposition said, “House Committee had sent notice to Abhijit Iyer Mitra to appear today at 11 am as there is allegation against him and the probe is on. He had also intimated through mail that he would appear before the House Committee today. In another mail, he had said that he has committed unpardonable sin by uttering unwarranted remarks for which he has begged apology admitting his crime.”

“Even though such an apologetic message has been received via mail, he is bound down to depose before the Committee as has been served summon,” he remarked.

The Leader of Opposition further stated, “As trains and flights have been cancelled due to the weather condition as per media reports, he might not have been able to depose today. Since he has promised to appear but didn’t, it doesn’t mean that he has offended the House.”

“Taking into consideration the unavoidable circumstances, he has been re-served notice and the DGP has been directed to make him (Abhijit) appear before the House Committee on 23.10.2018 at 11 am in Room No 54 of Odisha Assembly,” informed the Leader of Opposition.

Replying to a media query, he also informed that Abhijit has not appealed the House Committee for providing him any security cover during his appearance here.

Since a privilege motion was moved against Abhijit during the Monsoon Sesssion of Odisha Assembly last month as his issue had stalled the proceedings due to ruckus, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat had to form the House Committee after convening an all party meeting then.

Last month, Odisha Police had arrested Abhijit in New Delhi with the help of Nizamuddin Police Station, but the Saket Court there had granted him conditional bail on the very day of his arrest and court forward.
