Bhubaneswar: BJP MP from Bhubaneswar Aparajita Sarangi has been appointed chairperson of the Joint Committee of Parliament to examine bills aimed at removing top government officials, including the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers, if arrested or detained for 30 days on serious charges.
The 31-member committee has sparked controversy, with key opposition parties, including Congress and Trinamool Congress, boycotting it. The committee comprises 15 members from BJP, 11 from NDA constituents, four opposition members, and one nominated member.
Opposition members include Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Akali Dal), Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM), and Niranjan Reddy (YSRCP). The bills under scrutiny are ‘The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The Government Of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
