Bhubaneswar: While Odisha’s ruling BJD’s political bête noire BJP has carved out its Mission Odisha roadmap for 2019 general elections setting a target of clinching 120+ assembly seats and often dubbing BJD Government ‘inefficient’ and ‘incapable’ alleging Odisha is ‘lagging behind in terms of development’, the million dollar question that rakes up the brains of general public is what for the same BJP-ruled Centre is repeatedly rewarding Odisha.

As has been in the previous years, this year too Odisha has been recently awarded for its 'outstanding' work in the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and has also bagged seven more awards for successful implementation of other rural schemes.

In his reactions, BJD spokesperson Pratap Keshari Deb said, “When the Union Ministers and other Departments are reviewing on the implementation in Odisha, not only Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) but also others, the Central Government is praising the remarkable work done by Odisha Government.”

“The State BJP spokespersons here, on the contrary, are expressing their intolerance and repeatedly publicizing that Odisha Government is not doing anything. While their Central Government is saying that good work is being done in Odisha, these local spokespersons are just the reverse. Hence, they are getting exposed and embarrassed in the public,” lambasted the BJD spokesperson.

On the contrary, Odisha BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra argued, “Over 200 centrally sponsored schemes are being implemented in Odisha. In one or two schemes papers have been arranged and presented by the Odisha Government.”

“The condition of roads in Odisha is better known to the public as shown regularly by the media. How ambulance is unable to reach and the expecting mothers are delivering on roads. The real pictures can be seen here. Thus, it is meaningless to bag prizes by means of paper work. When the real development hasn’t reached the people, it’s all fiasco. The same manipulated paper is objected by the CAG later on. This is the policy of Odisha Government,” the BJP leader hit back.

Senior journalist Rabi Das opined, “In many areas of centrally sponsored schemes, Odisha Government is performing very well. It doesn’t mean that development is upto the mark.”

“There are some criteria and yardsticks under which Odisha is coming ahead. Hence, there is no question of manipulation either by the Odisha Government or the Centre,” he argued.

Notably on September 11 (Tuesday), the Union Ministry for Rural Development (RD) awarded Odisha Government for outstanding work in implementing the RD schemes. The State received a total of three awards-first award in length, second award in habitation and again second award for use of green technology in Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) scheme. The State has constructed 7175.7km, including 855 km with green technology giving connectivity to 1776 habitations.

Odisha has recently bagged eight national awards for successful implementation of the centrally sponsored rural development schemes during a programme held at Vigyan Bhawan in national capital on Tuesday.

Out of the 236 national awards, Odisha received eight awards from Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayat Raj and Mines Narendra Singh Tomar.

Three awards were presented to Odisha as the best performing State under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Yojana and National Rural Livelihood Mission.

Odisha also received awards for best road connectivity under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and adopting green technology in construction project. Awards were also given in four different categories for successful implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) especially in the tribal districts of Kandhamal and Rayagada.

Similarly, Hatiota Gram Panchayat of Ganjam district was awarded the best panchayat for successfully implementing the MGNREGA whereas Rayagada Collector Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar received National Award for effective implementation of MGNREGS for the year 2016-17.
