Arjuna Awardee Weightlifter Bijay Kumar Satpathy Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Arjuna awardee weightlifter Bijay Kumar Satpathy passed away due to old-age related ailment yesterday at his residence in Berhampur.

He breathed his last at 8:40 pm, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire aspiring weightlifters.

Hailing from Somnath Nagar near Aska Road in Berhampur, Satpathy had received the Arjuna Award from the former President Gyani Jail Singh on August 29, 1982.

Besides, Satpathy was a remarkable athlete who made India proud with his achievements in the weightlifting arena. He was a five-time National Champion in weightlifting from 1977-78 to 1982-83, representing the Indian Navy and Indian Railways in various national events.

He came second in 1980-81 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand. He also won Bronze in Asian Championship at Nagoya in Japan in 1981-82, Gold in 1981 Mini Commonwealth Games at Brisbane in Australia, Silver in 1982 CWG at Brisbane.

Satpathy showcased remarkable strength and technique in weightlifting, with notable achievements in various categories. In the 59 kg category, he successfully lifted 147 kg in clean and jerk and 107-110 kg in snatch. Additionally, in the 56 kg category, he demonstrated impressive skills, lifting 105 kg in snatch and 135-137 kg in clean and jerk. These feats highlight his exceptional talent and prowess in the sport.

Satpathy’s passing has sent shockwaves through the sports community, with many paying tribute to his achievements and legacy.

He will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to Indian weightlifting, and his memory will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
