ASI Of Police & Tax Collector Convicted For Bribery In Separate Cases

Bhubaneswar: A former Assistant SI of police was convicted in a case of bribery on Monday. The ex ASI in question, Laxmidhar Panda, was posted at Banapur police station in August, 2013, when he was arrested by the Vigilance for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Today, Panda was convicted by the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years and to pay fine of Rs 5,000/- (Rupees Five Thousand), and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for the offence U/s 7 PC Act, 1988.

The Court further sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 years and to pay fine of Rs 5,000, and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) PC Act, 1988. Both the sentences are to run concurrently.

Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for dismissal of Sri Laxmidhar Panda, ASI from service following his conviction.

In another matter, the Ex-Tax Collector of Berhampur Municipal Corporation Dharanidhar Swain was convicted in a case of bribery.

The court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Berhampur and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years and to pay fine of Rs 5,000, and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further rigorous
imprisonment for a period of 1 month for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) PC Act, 1988.
