Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s new COVID-19 cases have soared to 4,714 in the past 24 hours, up by nearly 10 times since the start of 2022. Total 70,200 samples were tested on Saturday out of which 4,714 were found positive for COVID-19. The State’s test positivity rate, which was 1.13% on January 4 has gone up to 6.71% on January 9.
On Sunday, Odisha’s Covid tally stood at 10,75,583 out of which 10,46,491 persons have been cured while 8,468 succumbed to the disease. At present, there are 20,831 active cases in the State.
As per the data shared by the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department, 424 COVID-19 positive cases were detected on January 1 out of which 249 persons were in quarantine while 175 were local contact cases. The report for January 8 is concerning as the cases have spiralled more than 10-folds over the last one week.
Out of 4,714 new cases detected on January 8, 2,755 persons are in quarantine while 1,959 are local contacts. As many as 416 children below 18 years were tested as positive for Covid on Saturday. Cities such as capital Bhubaneswar, Sundergarh, Sambalpur and Cuttack are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, as the country faces third wave of the pandemic.
Experts have attributed the third wave to the new and higly transmissible variant of COVID-19, the Omicron which has overtaken ‘Delta’. As per official data, Odisha has reported 75 Omicron cases whereas, the tally has gone past 3,600 in the country.
In Odisha, the most number of new cases were detected in Khurda (1619), Sundergarh (662), Sambalpur (437), Cuttack (360), Jharsuguda (154), Balasore (123), and Mayurbhanj (113). Pilgrim town Puri which witnessed a melee on Saturday reported 119 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.
