Mayurbhanj: The Forest department on Saturday sacked two temporary workers for throwing fire torches at an elephant herd that invaded several villages in the Karanjia forest in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on July 27.
The attack on the elephants aimed at driving the animals away from the residential areas, but in the process, a young elephant sustained grievous burn injuries.
According to reports, the Forest Department decided to sack the accused Deepak Munda and Bapi Majhi engaged in the Dudhiaini Range instead of arresting them as the department feared that arresting the accused might prompt the other temporary forest workers to launch an agitation.
According to Dudhiani Range Officer Pradeep Parshari, the two accused left the Forest department and the area soon after their dismissal from service.
