**Rayagada:** The court of the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) here today granted Kashipur Police to take Sumant Nayak, the accused in the attack on Utkal Bharat party chief Kharavela Swain, on a three-day remand.
Kashipur Police had yesterday appealed the court to take Sumant on remand for five days. He had been arrested on the midnight of November 24 after he attacked Swain while addressing a roadside meeting at Kashipur in the district.
Sumant had demanded a proof of Police permission obtained for the meeting and questioned Swain about the purpose of his visit. However, as Swain questioned his authority, it vexed Sumant and he picked up a file kept on a chair nearby and hit Swain with it.
Following the incident, Swain alleged he was being attacked by BJD activist. Various opposition parties also targeted the ruling-party in State over the attack.
In reaction, BJD spokesperson Sanjay Das Burma said, “I condemn the incident as it is not acceptable in a republic.” He further criticised the attempt of Kharavela Swain and a designated media house to defame BJD in Rayagada.
The Odisha Crime Branch has also registered a case and has formed a three-member team, including two Inspectors and one ASI to probe the case. The team today conducted on the spot investigation and has also included the footage of the attack under its purview of investigation.
