Baripada: The carcass of a baby elephant was recovered from a pond in Jinkpahari village under Nafri Panchayat at the foothills of Similipal sanctuary.
The carcass was found floating in the water by local villagers. The elephant is believed to be three-month old.
Bangiriposhi range officer has initiated an investigation into the matter. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Locals alleged that the government failed to protect the animals and prevent wildlife trafficking during the wildlife week in Mayurbhanj district.
A herd of 30 elephants were roaming in the locality for the last two-three days.
