Bhubaneswar: Bhandaripokhari police rescued a baby girl, who was allegedly sold for a meager Rs 20,000, from Rajabagicha area in Cuttack city on Wednesday.
Earlier, police had detained three persons in connection with the alleged sale of a one-month-old baby girl from Bayabanapur village under the Bhandaripokhari police station limits.
The action followed a complaint lodged by the infant’s grandmother, Sabitri Das, who alleged that her son Sipu Das and his wife Rina sold her granddaughter.
According to the complainant Sabitri, the couple took the baby to a hospital on Monday and later went to another location. However, when they returned home late at night without the child, she became suspicious.
Savitri had approached the police station with concerns about her granddaughter’s whereabouts, suspecting foul play by her son, daughter-in-law. She alleged that when she questioned them, they verbally abused and assaulted her.
Acting on the complaint, police reached the village and detained Sipu Das, his wife, and his mother-in-law for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the infant’s father, Sipu Das, claimed they sold the baby to pay off debts.
