Sambalpur: The District & Sessions Court in Sambalpur has rejected the bail plea of the lawyers who had been arrested for vandalising the court premises during the protest demanding establishment of High Court bench in Sambalpur.
Lawyers have been protesting for a long time for the establishment of a High Court bench in Sambalpur. Common people joined the agitation and broke into the judge’s chambers and caused extensive vandalism.
After this incident, the Bar Council of India suspended the license of 28 lawyers of Sambalpur District Bar Association. Their licenses have been suspended for the next 18 months. In addition, as many as 28 lawyers have been arrested at various stages in this incident. In addition, a non-lawyer and eight transgenders have been arrested and are in jail.
On the other hand, the Supreme Court rejected the demand for establishment of High Court Bench in Western Odisha. The Supreme Court said that there is no need for more benches in terms of geographical and professional facilities.
