Bhubaneswar: While over 80 have been hospitalised following an alleged ammonia gas leak yesterday at a shrimp processing unit at Khantapada of Balasore, Odisha Health Department has sent specialist doctors to Balasore district headquarters hospital to help the local doctors in the treatment. Meanwhile, the owner of Falcon Marines rubbished that this was a case of a gas leak.
The Health Department has sent four specialists from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack and three specialists from PRM Medical College and Hospital, Baripada to Balasore DHH. Being further prepared to face any eventuality, 40 beds have been kept ready at the SCB Hospital, informed the health department officials.
Refuting the claims Tara Patnaik, owner of Falcon Marines, said to OMMCOM NEWS this was not a case of a gas leak but due to overuse of bleaching powder. He said that bleaching powder was used every day to clean the plant and on Wednesday evening it was used in a bit excess. Speaking on reports of minors in employment, he rubbished the claims and said that he has initiated an inquiry in the matter.
Balasore Collector and Superintendent of Police were unavailable for comment.
Simultaneously, a case has been registered at Khantapada Police Station and three factory officials have been detained and are being interrogated. Director-General of Police (DGP), Odisha, Bijay Kumar Sharma tweeted that a special forensic team has been sent from Bhubaneswar to aid the investigation.
