Bargarh: Makardhwaj Barge, Excise Superintendent of Bargarh district, was arrested by Sambalpur Vigilance on Friday on charges of possessing assets worth over 1.55 crore, disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Based on the allegation of acquisition of disproportionate assets by Barge, officers of Vigilance, Sambalpur Division, on the strength of search warrants issued by the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Bolangir, had conducted simultaneous raids at eight places on Thursday.
They had searched his residential house at Sambalpur, a double-storied residential building at Burla town, a residential building at Bolangir, a house at native village Bhagitikira in Subarnapur, Gas godown of a relative at Dunguripali in Subarnapur, rented house of a relative at Barpali in Bargarh, flat at Radha Enclave in Bargarh and office chamber at Bargarh.
In course of search and inventory, Barge was found in possession of assets worth Rs 1,55,34,970 including two numbers of double storied buildings, two numbers of single-storied buildings, two numbers of plots, one four-wheeler, one two-wheeler, deposits in different banks and post offices, gold and silver ornaments, cash over 2.5 Lakh and costly household articles.
As Barge was found in possession of huge disproportionate assets which he could not account for satisfactorily, a case against him and his spouse was registered at Sambalpur Vigilance Police Station under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 following which he was arrested. Investigation of the case is in progress.
