Baripada: In a significant judgment aimed at strengthening justice delivery and women’s safety, a Fast Track Special Court constituted under the POCSO Act at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for rape and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
The convict, Jisu alias Jishunath Hembram (38), a resident of Tiloposi village under Morada police station limits was found guilty of raping a woman in September 2022. He was arrested a few days after the incident following a written complaint lodged with the police. The trial in the case commenced on October 4, 2024.
As per the prosecution, the accused had wrongfully restrained the woman by forcing her to take a wrong route, voluntarily caused her hurt, and subsequently committed rape.
The court awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000, with an additional six months’ rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.
