**Bhubaneswar**: The student wing of ruling BJD, Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) on Saturday staged demonstration against Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the ongoing Mahanadi water sharing dispute.
Angry BCJD activists along with some senior BJD leaders burnt effigy of Singh and chanted slogans against the Chhattisgarh Government at Master Canteen Square here on Saturday.
The party alleged that the silence of BJP national president Amit Shah on this issue proves BJP’s apathetic attitude towards the State and its people. Anant Narayan Jena, Mayor, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) said, “Amit Shah spoke on everything except Mahanadi and Polavaram issues in his political address. This is not acceptable and we will fight against this at every possible front.”
Prominent student leader and former Utkal University president Chinmaya Sahoo said, “Students of the State are well aware of the conspiracy that is going on. We’ll not tolerate Chhattisgarh’s arbitrary attitude. Students will carry on the baton of this movement and fight till the end.”
On the contrary, bête noire BJP delivered a sharp reaction against this event.
State General Secretary of the party, Bhrugu Baxipatra said, “These kinds of theatrics will not solve the problems. Central Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has already clarified that the Centre will protect Odisha’s interests. Mahanadi water sharing dispute is a result of Odisha Government’s failure and they have no right to blame Chhattisgarh.”
Notably, BJP’s national president Amit Shah, addressing the mega rally at the Baramunda Ground here on Friday, termed the ruling BJD in Odisha a ‘non-performing government’, but amazingly remained silent on the burning issues of Mahanadi and Polavaram.
