Sambalpur: An elderly person died after being attacked by a bear at Talagaon under Redhakhol Forest Range in Sambalpur district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Abhimanyu Sethi.
Sethi had gone to a nearby forest when he was attacked by a wild animal. He screamed for help.
Villagers rushed to the spot soon after hearing his cries and tried to save him by pelting stones at the bear. However, it was too late by then. They could only stop the bear from dragging the man inside the jungles. His eyes, face, back and other body parts were severely injured.
A severely injured Sethi was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
It is learnt that the village of late has witnessed regular movement of wild animals including bears. Due to shortage of food in the forest, many bears often stray into the nearby villages.
