Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park authorities in the capital city have made special arrangements for the animals to overcome the effects of the heat wave prevailing in the region. Watermelons, super fruits like sugarcane and anti-heat medicines are being given to the animals as per vets’ advice. The enclosures are covered with bamboo thatch and reed screens to protect the animals from the intense heat.
In addition, 24-hour water supply has been ensured to all enclosures and coolers have been provided for the chimpanzees and gibbons. Provisions have been made for bears to immerse themselves in ice and water.
Similarly, artificial streams and water irrigation systems have been arranged for the avian family in the zoo. Nandankanan has 14 drinking water kiosks including five cold drinking water kiosks at different places for tourists. Arrangements are being made to install some new kiosks.
It is worth mentioning here that Odisha is reeling under an intense heat wave with the mercury breaching 41°C at several places. The weather conditions are likely to worsen further, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
