Berhampur: A special POCSO court in Ganjam district on Thursday sentenced a man to death for the rape of a minor girl five years ago, an official said.
The Ad-hoc Fast Track Special Court (FTSC) at Berhampur convicted Keshaba Nahak alias Kesha, a resident of Manasila village under Polosara police limits, under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as well as Sections 376(2)(F) and 376 AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The death penalty, however, is subject to confirmation by the Orissa High Court.
Special Public Prosecutor Siba Prasad Mishra said the court also sentenced Nahak to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. Additionally, the convict was awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC.
According to case records, Nahak raped the minor girl on November 21, 2021. The Polosara police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family.
The court convicted Nahak after examining witnesses and evidence gathered during the police investigation.
In its verdict, the court also directed the authorities to provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the victim.
