Berhampur: The district police have been successful in busting an online cricket betting rackets by arresting two kingpins and seizing cash as well as ATM cards and mobile phones.
Briefing media, Southern Range DIG Satyabrata Bhoi said, “Rs 33.61 lakh cash, mobile phones, ATM cards have been seized from their possession. Our interrogation reveals that some more accused are involved in it. We’re tracking them. Very soon they’ll be arrested.”
“Their network has been spreading both inland and overseas. The modus operandi has no physical contact but through websites, as they are using technology like mobile phone and computer. Our efforts are on to completely uproot this betting racket in Berhampur as a large number of youth mass falling prey to it. SP, Berhampur is on his toes.”
“I thank all our police teams and SP, Berhampur for busting such a racket and seizing a huge sum,” lauded the DIG.
As per a press note, acting on the tip-off relating to the organization of illegal online cricket betting racket on the Indian Premier League (IPL), teams were constituted to nab the kingpins of betting rackets in Berhampur city on 29.10.2020 and 30.10.2020. During the raid, a gang was busted in Gosaninuagoan police limits and two accused persons namely R. Lalie Achary and K. Prasant Kumar Subudhi were apprehended and huge cash of Rs 33,61,200 was seized along with mobile phone handsets and other incriminating articles.
On thorough interrogation, it is ascertained that the accused persons used to play in various online betting websites. The accused persons have conspired themselves with the help of agents of different cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, and Dubai and collected a huge sum of money from the general gullible public to bet online in IPL cricket with a false assurance of getting a profitable margin of return.
