Bhubaneswar: The standing committee meeting of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) today witnessed a heavy pandemonium, with two groups of corporators clashing and the mayor and deputy mayor walking out.
The meeting was abruptly closed, and corporators staged a dharna in front of the main gate, raising slogans and demanding the commissioner’s removal.
The dispute, which has been simmering for days, boiled over as corporators questioned the newly formed standing committee and raised concerns about sanitation. Some corporators directly accused the commissioner of mismanagement, prompting him and the mayor to leave the meeting.
Despite the mayor’s attempts to placate the corporators, the situation remained tense, with some corporators closing the main gate and refusing to back down. The commissioner has reported the misbehaviour to the relevant authorities, while a councillor supporting the mayor alleged that a specific individual was orchestrating the unrest.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the city, with many calling for resolution to the long-standing dispute between the two corporate groups.
