Berhampur: Police have successfully cracked last Thursday’s brutal murder of Suraja Behera, a 57-year-old woman of Alakapuri area under Berhampur Sadar police limits.
Police today arrested the accused identified as Balia alias Balaram Sahu (26 yrs), a resident of Danua Sahi, Bhabinipur under Berhampur Sadar police limits.
Addressing a presser here today, Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra said, “We have arrested the accused identified as Balaram Sahu, he is a locksmith who had visited the deceased’s place to repair the lock of their almirah.”
Mishra said that while repairing the lock Balaram had seen the valuables kept in the almirah.
When the deceased’s husband had gone out in the evening and the former was alone, Balaram had entered the house by scaling the boundary wall with an intent to steal the valuables kept in the almirah, Mishra added.
The SP said that as the accused was noticed by the deceased who warned him to inform the police, aggrieved and afraid of having been identified, he assaulted the deceased with a kitchen knife in the drawing room which lead to her death.
The accused took away the mobile phone of the deceased and left the place after locking the door grille from outside, the SP added.
Mishra informed that the blood-stained weapon of offense, the apparel that was worn by the accused at the time of the crime, mobile phone of the deceased, vanity bag, Aadhar Card of the deceased, and small ornament box have been seized.
