Berhampur: In a major breakthrough, Berhampur district police have arrested five persons and seized 805.5 gm gold ornaments and gold biscuits and 2.050 kg silver ornaments and silver biscuits from their possession in connection with a series of burglaries reported at different police stations under its jurisdiction during last month.
The accused persons have been identified as S Santosh alias Santu (35), T Bhajan alias Akash (20), T Dillip (19) all of Balipada Indira Awas under Berhampur Sadar police limits; and Serajul Mallik (38) and Koushik Panja (22) both from Paschim Medinipur in West Bengal, police said.
Police have estimated the worth of seized gold ornaments to be approximately Rs 40,27,500.
Police have stated that following reports of a series of burglaries at Nimakhandi, Badabazar and Golanthra a team consisting of Inspector In-Charges (IICs) of Nimakhandi, Golanthara, Bada Bazar under the SDPO Sadar was formed to detect the cases.
The police have said that after getting information on the accused persons they were apprehended and after thorough interrogation, they confessed to having committed the burglaries at Shakti Nagar under Nimakhandi police limits, Om Nagar & Gold Testing Center Sana Bazar Chhaka under Bada Bazar police limits and Kuntulu Sorola under Golanthara police limits.
According to the police, on February 14 a case was registered at Bada Bazar police station that unknown culprits committed a burglary at the Gold Testing Centre at Sana Bazar Chhaka on the intervening night of February 13 and 14.
The culprits robbed 615 gm of gold biscuits with some gold foils and around 2 kg of silver slabs, the police added.
During the investigation, a team of the Bada Bazar police station proceeded to Daspur village of Paschim Medinipur district in West Bengal.
Police have informed that the team successfully traced the culprits, arrested two persons and recovered 540 gm of gold and 1.700 kg of silver.
The arrested accused persons have been brought here and will be forwarded to court, the police added.
Police have informed that all gold ornaments weighing 805.5 gm and silver ornaments weighing 2kg and 50.6 gm were recovered from the accused persons’ possession.
They have been arrested and forwarded to court, police said.
Further, the seized gold and silver ornaments have been handed over to the rightful owners at the Superintendent of Police office here in the presence of all the officers, police said.
