Bhubaneswar: Sumati Parida of Padmapur Panchayat under Basudevpur block of Bhadrak district, who had consumed poison on March 14 after her defeat in the Panchayat Samiti Member election, breathed her last on Tuesday.
Her husband Ramakant Parida had hung himself to death from the ceiling of his house on the same day Sumati had consumed poison following an argument over the electoral loss.
Sumati was undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
According to reports, the duo had to face an embarrassment during a victory procession carried out by the winning candidate in Padmapur Panchayat under Basudevpur block in the district. Amid the chaos, the rival party members allegedly cast defamatory remarks on the couple and their poll performance.
It was after this alleged humiliation, the argument between the couple started. Ramakant blamed his wife for the results which she could not tolerate and attempted suicide. Holding himself responsible for his wife’s desperate attempt, Ramakant resorted to the extreme step, said family sources.
