Bhubaneswar: The Commission of Inquiry under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd) Chitta Ranjan Dash, a former judge of the Orissa and Calcutta High Courts, began the process to probe the alleged assault of an Army officer and his fiancée at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
The Commission started work at the office set up in the Special Circuit House in Bhubaneswar. The commission is now likely to issue notifications and invite affidavits from the concerned parties.
Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania and other senior officials were present when the probe process was initiated. The Odisha government has already released the term of reference for the Commission of Inquiry.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered a judicial probe headed by Justice Chitta Ranjan Dash after the alleged custodial assault on the Army Captain and his girlfriend created a nation-wide uproar. The Commission has been asked to submit its findings to the government within 60 days.
In addition, the ongoing Crime Branch probe into the incident is also in progress.
Notably, the army officer and his fiancée had initially approached the Bharatpur police station on September 15 to lodge a complaint of road rage wherein they were allegedly harassed by some local youths.
