Bhitarkanika National Park To Remain Shut To Visitors For Annual Crocodile Census

Bhubaneswar: As the annual census of the estuarine crocodiles has reportedly been scheduled to begin from tomorrow till January 23, the Bhitarkanika National Park in coastal Kendrapara district will remain closed to the visitors.

Sources said that the entry of the visitors has been restricted so that the headcount of the reptiles can been conducted by the survey team hassle-free as the presence of the visitors disturbs the exercise.

Sources also informed that the Bhitarkanika Mangrove (Wildlife) Forest Division has pressed into service over 20 teams for the annual census of the estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles claimed to be exclusively found in the water bodies like the rivers, brooks and creeks under the jurisdiction of Bhitarkanika National Park as well as its peripheral areas.

Sources further informed that the reptiles found here are of rare species as they not found anywhere else in Odisha.
