Bhubaneswar: The Deputy General Manager of Biju Patnaik International Airport, Umakant Patel, has been arrested on charges of deceiving an air hostess by allegedly concealing his marital status and entering into a relationship with her. Police said that Patel was arrested on Saturday and produced before a local court.
According to police sources, Patel was transferred to Bhubaneswar Airport about four months ago after serving at Delhi Airport. During his posting in Delhi, he allegedly developed a relationship with an air hostess employed by a private airline, purportedly misrepresenting himself as unmarried. On the pretext of marriage, he is accused of establishing a physical relationship with her.
The complainant has alleged that when she became pregnant, Patel coerced her into terminating the pregnancy. She later relocated to Bhubaneswar for work, where Patel, following his transfer, allegedly continued the relationship.
The matter came to light after the woman reportedly discovered that Patel was married and had a child. Upon confronting him, she was allegedly threatened, prompting her to file a complaint at the Airport Police Station.
Following the complaint, police registered a case and arrested Patel. He has been booked under Sections 81, 82(1), 89, 69, 115(2), 351(2), and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is in progress, police added.
