Bhubaneswar Finishes 2nd Runner-Up At World Smart City Awards

**Bhubaneswar**: Bhubaneswar finished second runner-up at World Smart City Awards organised by Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) at Barcelona in Spain.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena has confirmed the news on Thursday afternoon.

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu has bagged the fourth place in the runners-up list.

Nairobi, capital city of Kenya, has bagged the top spot while Morocco, a North African country, secured first runner-up in the prestigious smart city list.

Expressing happiness over the news, the Mayor said: “Yes, Bhubaneswar emerged as the second runner-up in the World Smart City Awards held at Barcelona. The recognition will help to woo more tourists to the city and will attract investors from across the world.”

“We are also grateful to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who is constantly guiding to make Bhubaneswar the best city,” Jena added.

BMC team had made a presentation before the jury for getting an award and around 250 cities from 45 countries across the world had participated in the competition, the Mayor informed.

Bhubaneswar had submitted its proposal on ” Smart City Bhubaneswar: Achieving Social Equity Through New Urbanisim In Action” to the evaluating committee of the World Smart City Awards.

World Smart City Awards were established in order to identify cities, projects and innovative ideas in line with nurturing sustainable urban development. The official portal of the SCEWC said hundreds of proposals are received from key smart city players from around the globe and the aim of these awards is “to recognize, promote and support innovative solutions or strategies that can potentially change citizen’s lives by increasing efficiency, generating business and improving quality of life.”

Worth mentioning, the Odisha capital had topped among the first batch of 20 cities that were selected to be developed as smart city, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship programme.
