Bhubaneswar: The Cyber Crime & Economic Offence Police of Bhubaneswar arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly duping a local resident of Rs 20 lakh by promising to install an IndianOil petrol pump in the Palasuni area.
The accused has been identified as Satish Kumar, a resident of Apsarh village under Warisaliganj police station in Bihar.
According to police, Satish Kumar deceived Sarada Prasanna Routray, a resident of Palasuni, Bhubaneswar, by claiming he would set up an IndianOil petrol pump. Sarada handed over a cheque for Rs 20 lakh as part of the deal. Satish then fled to Bihar. Upon realizing the scam, Sarada lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
A special cyber police team, led by Sub Inspector Subhasree Nayak, along with two constables and two drivers, tracked down Satish in Bihar. Acting on intelligence, the team coordinated with Bihar Technical Inspector Balbir Singh and his 40-member squad to conduct a raid.
“At around midnight to 2.30 am, using ladders and with the assistance of Bihar commandos, we entered the accused’s residence and arrested him. The accused has confessed to his involvement in the fraud,” said SI Subhasree Nayak while speaking to reporters.
The operation spanned six days, during which the team adopted varying dress codes to maintain secrecy.
Police also recovered six mobile phones, bank passbooks, SIM cards, and laptops from Satish Kumar’s possession.
Further investigation is underway.
