Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped the locals and commuters using the Palasuni flyover on National Highway 16 in Bhubaneswar as a part of it sank on Sunday evening. Reportedly, a section near the edge of the flyover has sunk by around 10 inches. It was noticed at around 6 PM today following which the area has been barricaded.
A team from Commissionerate of Police and Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) personnel rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) staff also showed up and inspected the faults on the bridge.
DCP Anup Sahu said, “We have deployed police personnel at the spot and diverted the traffic to the left lane. The NHAI has been appraised of situation and the matter is being looked into.”
In January last year, large boulders weighing over a quintal had fallen from the Rasulgarh over bridge nearly one kilometre from the Palasuni flyover. Around four big boulders, followed by splinters fell on the ground and scattered on the round-about and the service road.
The incident months after the fatal ‘Bomikhal over bridge mishap’ had prompted angry reactions from the locals. One person had been killed and several others injured when a slab came down from the under construction flyover at Bomikhal area in September 10, 2017.
