Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward strengthening weather forecasting capabilities in Odisha, a new Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) will soon be installed in Bhubaneswar. The decision was confirmed by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Minister Pujari informed that the Centre has approved the proposal for the installation, which aims to enhance the state’s disaster preparedness and real-time weather monitoring.
“In Bhubaneswar, we are set to install a Doppler Weather Radar. The Centre has given its consent. Infrastructure work is already complete in Sambalpur and Balasore for two other DWRs,” he said.
The radar installations are being carried out with technical coordination between the State Works Department and the Disaster Management Department, with additional guidance from experts of the Union Home Ministry.
“Only the final fitting work remains. Once installed, these radars will significantly improve our weather forecasting operations and early warning systems,” Pujari added.
The new installations are expected to play a critical role in accurate forecasting, especially during extreme weather events like cyclones and heavy rainfall.
