Bhubaneswar: A magnificent bhawan (building) will be built here in memory of the famed Odia poet Gangadhar Meher in Bhubaneswar.
In addition to that, the poet’s death centenary which falls in March 2024 will be observed in an appropriate manner.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik assured this to a delegation of Nikhil Odisha Meher (Bhulia) Samaj who met him today at Naveen Nivas.
The Chief Minister said that a committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary for the purpose.
Swabhab Kavi Gangadhar Meher is the pride and glory of the Odia race. He has enriched Odia language and literature through his timeless literary creations.
A delegation of the Nikhil Odisha Meher (Bhulia) Samaj today met the Chief Minister to discuss about observing the great poet’s death centenary.
It is pertinent to mention here that the poet had organized a ‘Mahasabha’ of the Meher Samaj at Barpalli in 1924 which later became Nikhil Odisha Meher (Bhulia) Samaj.
The State government has taken various steps to preserve the memory of poet Gangadhar Meher.
Full body statues of the poet have been installed at Kalinga Hospital Chowk in Bhubaneswar and in Sambalpur and Berhampur.
This apart, work is in progress on the Rs 2090 crore worth Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System Irrigation scheme in the name of the famed poet which will become functional in 2023.
Similarly, Gangadhar Meher College in Sambalpur has been accorded unitary university status since 2015.
Besides, for spreading education Rs 430 crore Odisha Gangadhar Mehera Sikhya Manak Brudhi Yojana has been implemented.
The delegation thanked the Chief Minister for taking various steps during the last 20 years in honour of poet Gangadhar Meher.
