Bhubaneswar: Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced October 21 as the date for holding of by-election to the Bijepur Assembly constituency in Odisha.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora addressing a press conference at New Delhi on Saturday said that notification for the by-polls will be issued on September 23 and counting of votes will take place on October 24.

While the gazette notification for the by-election will be notified on September 23, the last date for filing of nominations has been fixed for September 30, said a press release issued by the ECI.

Similarly, the date for scrutiny of nominations has been fixed for October 1 and that for withdrawal of candidatures has been fixed for October 3.

Besides, the date before which election shall be completed has been fixed as October 27.

The seat fell vacant after Patnaik resigned from the seat in June last while retaining the Hinjili seat in Ganjam district that made the by-poll for Bijepur seat inevitable.

Patnaik, who had contested from Hinjili and Bijepur seats in the last general elections this year, had won both the seats.
