Bhubaneswar: In response to the confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Puri district, the State Public Health Department has activated emergency health protocols to ensure public safety and monitor those involved in containment efforts.
State Public Health Director Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, addressing the media on Monday, said, “Following confirmation of the bird flu outbreak, we immediately alerted our health teams and dispatched personnel to the affected area. As per standard protocol, we are coordinating closely with the Veterinary Department, which is responsible for handling avian influenza cases, including the culling of infected birds.”
The outbreak was reported at a poultry farm in Bada Ankula village under Delanga block in Puri district, where more than 6,700 birds have been culled after samples tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
“Our primary responsibility is to safeguard the health of those involved in the culling process—farm workers, farm owners, and veterinary staff. We have administered preventive doses and supplied necessary medicines. The Veterinary Department has provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) kits and masks, which are being used on-site,” Dr. Mishra said.
He added that medical teams are monitoring the health conditions of all personnel involved, with treatment to be provided if required.
“So far, the outbreak is confined to Puri district. We are maintaining strict vigilance and adhering to all containment protocols,” he said.
An additional review team is being deployed to assess the situation on the ground, while the district health team continues to submit reports twice daily. The government has assured the public that all developments are under close observation to prevent any further spread of the virus.
