Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has given a call for an 8-hour Balasore bandh on Wednesday in demand for justice for Soumyashree Bisi, a 20-year-old B.Ed student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore.
Soumyashree had set herself on fire on July 12 inside the college campus, reportedly over inaction on her complaint against the Head of the Department (HoD), Samir Kumar Sahu. She succumbed to over 90-95% burn injuries late Monday night at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The 8-hour bandh is likely to cause disruptions in normal life, with transportation and commercial activities coming to a standstill during the specified period. However, essential services such as hospitals and emergency services will continue to function as usual. Services including shops, markets, public transport, schools, and colleges will remain closed during this period.
Besides, the BJD has decided to gherao Lokseva Bhawan at 10 am, demanding justice for Soumyashree.
The party has appealed to the people of Balasore to participate in the bandh and show solidarity with the student’s family.
