Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to forgo its annual grand ‘Iftar and Eid Milan’ celebration this year in view of the devastating war in the Middle East, which has caused widespread loss of life and property.
BJD president Naveen Patnaik has expressed profound grief over the tragic situation, where thousands of innocent people have lost their lives, lakhs have been injured, and millions displaced, enduring immense hardship. The ongoing conflict has directly impacted over 10 countries and affected the entire world, including many Odias trapped in the region.
Addressing a press conference at Sankha Bhavan today, BJD vice-president and former minister Pratap Jena announced the decision. He recalled that every year, under Naveen Patnaik’s presence, the party hosts a magnificent ‘Iftar and Eid Milan’ event at Naveen Niwas, inviting Muslim brethren and dignitaries from various communities to promote harmony and brotherhood.
This year, due to the horrific war and the plight of Odias and others caught in the crossfire, the BJD has resolved to keep the celebration subdued and refrain from festivities. Patnaik has appealed to the public to abstain from celebratory events during this sorrowful period, underscoring solidarity with the victims. Jena emphasized the global repercussions of the war and the party’s sensitivity to human suffering. The press meet was attended by general secretary Manmath Kumar Routray, senior leader Sheikh Nizamuddin, spokesperson Sofia Alam, and Minority Cell co-convener Rina Begum, among others.
The move reflects the BJD’s commitment to humanitarian values amid escalating West Asia tensions, where Patnaik has previously urged governments to evacuate stranded Odias.
