**Bhubaneswar: ** As Opposition has moved ‘No Confidence Motion’ in the Lok Sabha and it is slated to be taken up tomorrow (Friday), all are agog to know if regional party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre or oppose it by siding with the Congress-led anti-BJP parties or even abstain from the crucial trust vote.
BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has been reiterating his party’s stand of maintaining equidistance from both BJP and Congress.
However, BJD had supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization in 2016, incumbent President of India Ram Nath Kovind’s candidature and had also supported PM Modi’s proposal for simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and Assemblies.
Speculations were rife that Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Tamil Nadu’s ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are likely to abstain from the whole exercise.
While BJD has 20 MPs in the Lok Sabha, AIADMK has 37.
On the other hand, BJP has a total of 272 MPs, including Lok Sabha Speaker out of the total 543 members in the Lower House of Parliament.
Besides, BJP’s allies Shiv Sena, Akali Dal, Lok Janshakti Party and Janata Dal (United) will support the ruling BJP and vote against the ‘no confidence motion’.
In his reactions, BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra said, “So far the No Confidence Motion is concerned, BJD has a clear stand that we have been maintaining equidistance from both BJP and Congress. When the No Confidence Motion will be put to debate tomorrow, BJD will make its opinion clear then in Parliament.”
“Whether we will vote for or against or abstain will be made clear by our party tomorrow in the Parliament. Before that it will be unjust to reveal. Whatever has been decided by our party, each of our MPs will act accordingly,” the BJD spokesperson stated.
