Balasore: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday staged a protest in front of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, demanding justice for Soumyasri Bisi, who attempted self-immolation allegedly due to harassment by a senior lecturer of the institution.
The student, who suffered 90-95% burns, is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The BJD protesters, led by party workers and supporters, marched to the college gate, where they burned effigies of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and local MP Pratap Sarangi.
The party demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister, citing their failure to address her plea. They also called for a CBI investigation into the incident, alleging that the failure of the state government and college authorities in addressing Soumyasri’s pleas led her to take drastic steps.
Notably, Soumyasri had reportedly faced harassment by Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahu. Despite complaints to the college principal and local authorities, no action was taken, which led her to set herself ablaze.
