BJD MLA Prabhat Biswal Arrested By CBI Over Seashore Chit Fund Scam

**Bhubaneswar/Cutttack: ** After being arrested on Monday night from his Cuttack city-based residence, ruling BJD MLA of Choudwar-Cuttack assembly seat, Prabhat Ranjan Biswal was forwarded to the Special CBI Court here on Tuesday afternoon by the central investigating agency.

The CBI has applied the court for a five-day remand of the arrested BJD MLA.

The Choudwar-Cuttack BJD MLA’s wife Laxmibilasini Biswal was earlier quizzed by the CBI regarding her involvement in the Jajpur district-based Benapur village land scam. The CBI had also summoned the MLA for questioning for about 15 times earlier this arrest.

Notably, the couple had sold a land to the Seashore company for a hefty amount and could not explain the details of his allegedly illegal transactions to the CBI.

In January this year, the CBI had raided his houses at Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Interestingly, he is the second BJD MLA to be arrested after Prabhat Tripathy.

Refuting the allegations, his brother said, “This is complete injustice and my brother is not involved in this scam.”

Meanwhile, his advocate, Anup Senapati has informed media that bail petition will be filed soon as Biswal has undergone surgery recently.

On the other hand, the ruling party said the arrest was politically motivated.

“Centre is using the CBI for political gains. This is vindictive politics. Centre used the CBI against (Trinamool chief) Mamata Banerjee, (Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo) Lalu Prasad and even media promoter Pranoy Roy. Now, it is targeting the BJD,” Subash Singh, BJD leader said.

“How long the chit fund scam investigation will go on? It’s over five years now. The union government’s ulterior motives have been exposed. People will give them a fitting reply,” he added.
