Bhubaneswar: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today announced Tihidi Block Chairperson Abanti Das as its candidate for the bye-election to be held for the Dhamnagar assembly constituency.
The announcement was made following the approval of Das’s candidature by BJD president Naveen Patnaik.
Das has long grassroots experience as she was actively involved in Mission Shakti Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Earlier in the day, the opposition Congress announced Baba Harekrushna Sethi as its candidate for the Dhamnagar by-poll following approval by the party’s national president Sonia Gandhi.
The BJP was the first to announce its candidate Suryavanshi Suraj Sthitaprajna for the by-poll on Sunday last.
He filed his nomination on Tuesday for the Dhamnangar by-poll scheduled to be held on November 3.
The Dhamnagar assembly constituency seat fell vacant after BJP sitting MLA and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Bishnu Sethi’s death, necessitating the bye-election.
Suryavanshi Suraj is the son of the Late Bishnu Sethi who passed away on September 19 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
While the last date for filing nominations is October 14, the counting of votes will be held on November 6.
