Bhubaneswar: Puri Collector-cum-District Election Officer on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from the constituency, Sambit Patra, for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

Reportedly, Sambit had on Monday took out an election rally in Puri without obtaining necessary permission. Presence of BJP flag on his vehicle had been noticed by the flying squad and had also recorded the activities.

Based on it Puri Collector Jyotiprakash Das has directed Sambit to show cause within three days.

In his reaction, Sambit said he has not yet received the notice and denied it as an election rally. "I was going for the darshan of Lord Jagannath when people noticed me. They know me as a candidate and therefore came and greeted me with garlands and other items," said Patra.

Even Congress had yesterday filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Sambit, claiming his rally as a ‘religion-based’ campaign.

The Congress had pointed out that Patra had held an idol of Lord Jagannath during his rally and had also posted pictures on social media holding the idol of the deity, in violation of Model Code of Conduct, as the Election Commission of India has clearly mentioned that no election can be fought on basis of any religion, caste, creed or culture.

While a police complaint in this regard has also been lodged at Singhadwar Police Station, BJD had also alleged the action of Sambit during the election rally clearly reflects BJP's communal ideology.
