BJP Seeks Obituary Reference On Vajpayee In Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session

**Bhubaneswar:** BJP Legislature Party Leader in the Odisha Assembly KV Singh Deo today requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to remember the contribution of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee towards the State and to table a resolution in the Monsoon Session of the House seeking obituary reference on his demise.

Addressing media persons, Singh said, “The Paradip Refinery, establishment of AIIMS in Bhubaneswar and support received by Odisha after the Super Cyclone are the examples of Vajpayee’s love and concern for the State. For the salvation of the great soul, I have requested the Chief Minister to bring a resolution unanimously on any of the working days of the Monsoon Session of the Assembly to make obituary reference on Vajapayee where people of Odisha will thank him for his contributions.”

Vajpayee had laid the foundation stone of the Paradip refinery in May 2000. During his tenure as Prime Minister he had accorded his seal of approval to set up AIIMS at various places in the country and the first ever AIIMS at Bhubaneswar was sanctioned.

It was after his visit to Odisha after the 1999 Super Cyclone, he had declared that funds will never be constraint for the development of Odisha. He had faced criticism from opposition and surprised many in his government by announcing housing assistance for 7 lakh families in the affected districts.

In reaction to the request of Singh, BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said, “Vajpayeeji was above nasty politics, he is revered as a statesman and there is no second opinion on it. He was also a part of the Morarji Desai cabinet with Biju Patnaik and used to respect Biju Babu as elder brother. There is no issue in making obituary references to Vajpayee, but final decision lies with the Odisha Assembly.”

On the other hand, Congress MLA Prafulla Majhi said, it is upto the Chief Minister, “I have no idea about the steps that should be taken over any request of a legislator. Definitely, Vajpayee was the icon of BJP, but the Chief Minister will take the final decision on making the obituary reference on his death.”
