Bhubaneswar: Even though the opening day of Odisha Assembly’s Monsoon Session was solely meant for moving condolence motion for paying humble homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and five other departed leaders and souls of Odisha, ruling BJD alleged that BJP used the occasion for taking political mileage.

While BJP Legislature Party Leader K.V. Singhdeo was making his obituary references on Vajpayee in the Assembly today senior BJD MLA Debasish Samantaray objected to his speech dubbing it ‘political’. Later in his media reactions, Government Deputy Chief Whip Rohit Pujari said, “The way BJP Legislature Party Leader politicized today’s condolence motion in the House, it’s extremely unfortunate. I deem it as a black day in the history of Odisha Assembly.”

“It was uncalled for giving such a political statement during an obituary reference. He stated that he (Vajpayee) helped him (Naveen Patnaik) to become Chief Minister and later on his (Naveen Patnaik’s) governance is not performing well. It’s extremely unfortunate to make such poltical statements during the condolence message,” the senior BJD MLA fumed.

In his reactions, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra said, “Leader of the House moved condolence motion. We should all pay homage, but whatever happened in the House today during the obituary references was unjust.”

On the contrary, BJP leader KV Singh Deo defended, “I have spoken my heart out. I don’t wish that they (BJD) will agree with it. Do they disagree that Atal Bihari Vajpayee played a pivotal role in boosting up Naveen Babu as the Chief Minister? When the State was reeling under acute funds crunch and the State Government was unable to pay salary, Atalji had come to their rescue. Was Naveen Babu’s Government able to survive then under such a precarious situation if Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji had not extended a helping hand then?”
