Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to issue a new set of rules for pet dog owners in view of the frequent incidents of dog menaces across the country as well as the increasing number of pet and street dogs in the capital city.
Recently, the Bhubaneswar civic body decided at a meeting to prepare a comprehensive guideline on how to keep pet dogs at home and their proper maintenance. The BMC also plans to register all pet dogs in the area under its jurisdiction.
At the same time, the meeting decided to sterilize as well as vaccinate all street dogs in the city. As per the plan, about 100 stray dogs in the BMC area will be sterilized daily.
According to BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, the civic body will set up a new veterinary hospital at Mancheswar for the purpose. The municipal body will soon approve the by-law of 2023 in this regard, she said.
“The control measures on pet dogs and stray dogs were discussed in the meeting. Violation of the fixed guidelines regarding pet dogs and those who evade fines were discussed at the meeting,” said Das.
“We have started a new chip-based registration system for the pet dogs and their owners in Bhubaneswar. The chip will contain details like the name and address of the owner. As per the new rule, the owners will ensure the hygiene of their pet dogs and take steps so that their pets don’t disturb others,” the Mayor added.
