Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Oil India Ltd (OIL) to set up a compressed biogas plant in the capital city. The plant will produce about 8 tons of compressed bio gas to be utilised as CNG.
According to reports, the biogas plant will have a capacity of 200TPD and will be set up on eight acres at a cost of Rs 175 crore. The project will be completed within two years from the date of commencement of work.
As per the MoU, the Oil India Ltd. will fund, operate, and manage the bio gas project, while the BMC will supply the bio-degradable waste. Another partner of the project, the Government of Odisha, will provide support and ensure the success of the project.
Odisha Minister for H&UD Krushna Chandra Mohapatra told the media, “Once complete, the project will reduce the burden of waste in Bhubaneswar. About 200 metric tons of waste will be processed to produce bio gas and organic manure.”
He added that the state government has sanctioned required land for the project and requested OIL to complete the project before stipulated period of two years to make improve the sanitation in the capital city.
Housing and Urban Development Department Prinicipal Secretary Usha Padhee said that the bio gas project is an innovative step to go development and environment in tandem. “This is the only example where development, environment and people’s well-being will go hand in hand. The project will involve a lot of technology, economic activities and employment generation”.
