Bhubaneswar: In order to enforce plastic/polythene ban within the area of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), two enforcement squads constituted by the civic body conducted raids across the city on Friday.
Assisted by two policemen, the squad comprises of officials of the State Pollution Control Board, Commissionerate Police, Forest Department and BMC. In several shops, the officials seized banned plastic or polythene materials, imposed penalty and fines and issued show cause notices. They also made announcements on not to use plastic within the BMC area.
Authorised officer Biman Bihari Behura said, “We covered all spaces from Raj Mahal to Ram Mandir today. We also conducted raids in parts of Unit 1 Market and Vani Vihar. Till Bhubaneswar is not completely polythene-free, we will continue these raids. Fines have been imposed ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 5000 depending on size and quantity of plastic being used in the stores.”
