Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently undertook a GIS-based survey of the capital city of Bhubaneswar and divided it into 13,000 lanes to take up cleaning activities at regular intervals to combat mosquito menace.

As a part of the initiative ahead of the monsoon, the BMC has trained 800 sanitary workers to ensure the destruction of mosquito breeding sources. Each sanitary worker has been asked to cover 350 households for inspection and awareness.

According to reports, the civic body plans to clean up stagnant water from abandoned vehicles that hinder sanitation activities and result in traffic jams and impose fines on owners after identifying them.

In addition, the BMC plans to deploy at least three staff in each ward to eliminate mosquito larvae from the breeding sources.

It is worth mentioning here that about 235 dengue cases have been detected in Odisha this year. According to the Health Department, one dengue case was detected in Bhubaneswar and two others in Puri on Monday.

“As many as 235 dengue cases have been reported in Odisha this year with the highest number of 65 patients being from Khurdha district followed by 19 in Cuttack, 17 in Malkangiri, and 13 in Puri,” said public health director Dr Nilakantha Mishra.
