Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a pioneering effort to conduct a comprehensive dog census in the State capital. This ambitious project aims to count both stray and pet dogs, followed by their sterilization.
The BMC has begun preparations to launch the census from the last week of February. The civic body will conduct the census in collaboration with a company selected through a tender process. A team of sanitation department employees, supervised by the Zonal Deputy Commissioner, will assist the chosen company in the 3 zones of the Municipal Corporation.
The census will encompass ward-level counting in all wards, as well as separate counts in hospital and school areas. The BMC plans to identify dogs with a distinctive symbol to ensure accurate tracking. Stray dogs will be counted first, followed by the online registration and counting of pet dogs.
The entire process is expected to be completed within the next one to one and a half years.
