Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to setup two more crematoriums in the Capital City after Satya Nagar residents complained over sudden rise in number of cremations in the area.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions have been imposed on Puri’s Swargadwar for cremation of people belonging to other districts (apart from Puri). This is a reason why the load on Satya Nagar crematorium has increased, and the locals complained,” said Chaudhary.
So far, COVID-19 has claimed at least 119 lives in Bhubaneswar alone, in a period of seven months. Besides, people from different parts of the city and its outskirts prefer the Satya Nagar crematorium for funerals. This has added to the burden on the lone functional crematorium in the Capital City.
Municipal Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary on Monday informed that two more crematoriums will soon come up in the city. “The renovation of the electric crematorium has been completed by BMC at Satya Nagar. Two new crematoriums are under-construction, one at Patia and another at Khandagiri,” the BMC informed.
The civic body, in 2016 had announced plans to contruct two crematoriums in the city, in a bid to ease the load of the facility at Satya Nagar. The Corporation had then informed that the two proposed crematoriums will be constructed at Bharatpur and Chandrasekharpur.
