Malkangiri: Malkangiri police arrested 20-year-old Umesh Nag, the boyfriend of 25-year-old Mangaldei Nag, on Sunday after she was allegedly murdered in an attempt to conceal her pregnancy.
According to an official press release, on April 12, 2025, a decomposed and unidentified female body was recovered from the Sunatang jungle near Rengabandha village in Malkangiri district.
Following the discovery, an Unnatural Death (UD) case (No. 21/2-25) was registered at Malkangiri police station.
Subsequent post-mortem findings and circumstantial evidence led investigators to convert the UD case into a cognizable offense.
The identity of the deceased was confirmed through cross-verification of missing person reports from a neighboring police station in Chhattisgarh and analysis of technical data. The victim’s family later identified her based on her clothing and personal belongings.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased and the accused had been in a relationship for the past year. The two reportedly had a physical relationship, which the accused had attempted to keep secret.
When the victim became pregnant and the matter became public, Umesh allegedly insisted on terminating the pregnancy.
On March 20, 2025, he took her to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Malkangiri for an ultrasound and abortion. However, after examination, the attending medical officer declined to proceed with the termination.
Police allege that following the hospital visit, Umesh took the victim to the forest area where he murdered her to escape the responsibilities arising from the pregnancy. He then attempted to destroy evidence to cover up the crime.
The case is currently under investigation.
